The Negoiu Cabin

The Negoiu Cabin is one of the most beautiful mountain chalets in the Romanian Carpathians. It is located at 1540 meters altitude, in a heavenly place, and it is the starting point for a number of treks. The most accessible and interesting ones are those to the Negoiu Peak and to the Serbota Peak.

The Cabin has been renovated recently and it can now accommodate more than 200 tourists in summer, and up to 140 during winter.

The rooms have 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 beds, but if a room is not booked in its entirety, it’s likely that you will have to share it with other hikers, especially during peak season.

The maximum price is 85 RON* (~18 EUR) per person for one night (depending on the type of room you booked), and breakfast is included. *prices valid for 2020

There are two bathrooms on each floor, with multiple showers, sinks and toilets. And yes, there is hot water.

Electricity is also available around the clock and there is one outlet in each room. The heating system uses a stove (in each room), which needs to be checked from time to time.

Bonus feature: the Cabin has an outdoor wooden hot-tub (fits 10 people) and a sauna. It’s a blessing to spend an hour there after a long hike.

More photos can be found here.

Hot food can also be purchased at the cabin, as the kitchen is open almost the entire day. The menu includes both meat-based and vegetarian options. The prices are medium for a mountain cabin.

You can also buy drinks from here and I strongly recommend trying their visinata (a sweet and flavorful home-made sour-cherry liqueur – contains alcohol).

How to get there?

Difficulty: Easy

Time: 2-3 hours

Max. Altitude: 1540 meters, The Negoiu Cabin

The most common way has the Porumbacu de Sus village (40 km from Sibiu) as the starting point.

The trek can be split in two parts:

  1. Porumbacu de Sus – Quarry (by car), ~1h
  2. Quarry – Negoiu Chalet (easy difficulty), ~1h30

Porumbacu de Sus – Quarry

by car

Once you arrived in Porumbacu de Sus, you should continue on the paved road. This is the last point with a few little stores available (from where you can buy necessary things).

You can follow the signs to The Clay Castle (Castelul de Lut in Romanian), which can be visited. After you get to the Castle, you need to turn right. At the first cross, turn left and follow the road.

The road becomes an unpaved forest one, so a 4×4 car would be ideal, but it is good if it’s used a car not very close to the ground.

Be patient with the road, but keep in mind that you can stop the car anywhere and continue by walking.

You can add the map below to your Google Maps and follow it.

Quarry – The Negoiu Chalet

Once you have parked your car, now it’s the time to continue the road by walking.

Everything you have to do is to follow the unpaved road and the blue triangle sign.

The path is not difficult (even if it has some steep sections), and in 1h30 you should be able to get to the cabin.
